My Goals Worksheet
Goals provide direction and purpose to your actions. Without clearly defined goals, you may find yourself chasing vague aspirations or being overwhelmed by too many desires.
This framework helps you:
-
Distinguish between dreams (idealistic aspirations) and goals (specific, actionable plans).
-
Focus on necessary goals (essential for stability or growth).
-
Align your goals with your core values and priorities.
-
Avoid setting unrealistic or misaligned goals that lead to frustration.

Understanding the Four Key Components
1. Necessity
Definition: Goals that are essential for your well-being or foundational to other aspirations.
-
Example: Improving your health to gain energy for achieving personal or professional goals.
Why It Matters: Necessary goals address basic needs or pressing issues that, if ignored, can hinder progress in other areas.
2. Wants (Desires)
Definition: Goals that are driven by personal satisfaction, passion, or fulfillment.
-
Example: Learning a new skill, traveling to a dream destination, or pursuing a hobby.
Why It Matters: Desire-based goals keep you motivated and make life enjoyable, but they need to align with your broader vision and not distract from necessities.
3. Alignment
Definition: Ensuring that goals align with your values, resources, and time.
-
Example: Choosing goals that fit your life stage, such as focusing on financial stability before starting a business.
Why It Matters: Misaligned goals can lead to burnout, wasted effort, and disappointment.
4. Actionability
Definition: Turning aspirations into specific, measurable, and achievable steps.
-
Example: Breaking down "start a business" into steps like researching the market, creating a business plan, and securing funding.
Why It Matters: Without clear action plans, goals remain dreams.
How to Select Your Goals
-
Reflect on Your Current State
-
What aspects of your life feel stable, and which areas feel chaotic or unfulfilled?
-
Identify areas that demand immediate attention (health, finances, relationships).
-
-
Distinguish Between Dreams and Goals
-
Dreams are long-term, idealistic aspirations (e.g., "I want to travel the world").
-
Goals are actionable and grounded in reality (e.g., "Save $5,000 in the next year for travel").
-
-
Evaluate Each Aspiration
-
Is this a necessity (must-do), a want (nice-to-do), or a mix?
-
Does it align with my current values and resources?
-
Can I break it into specific, actionable steps?
-
-
Prioritize Based on Impact
-
Which goals will have the most significant positive impact on your life?
-
Prioritize goals that:
-
Address a pressing need.
-
Align with long-term dreams.
-
Bring a balance between necessity and passion.
-
-
-
Ask Yourself Key Questions
-
Why is this goal important to me?
-
What will achieving this goal allow me to do?
-
How will this goal improve my overall life?
-
